chickety china

I, like many other people my age, recently spent a good 5 hours of my life watching Vh1's Greatest Hits of the 90's, and spent the entire 5 hours going "oh, man," "awesome," and "that's my s*** right there." I couldn't end the musical reminiscence at number 1 - I actually took notes during the show, knowing there would be a bunch of songs I'd want to download. Doing my errands last night while listening to Mariah Carey's first album only whetted my appetite for more 90's music.

Thank goodness for high speed connections - I downloaded just shy of 150 songs in an hour. (that's including labeling them as they added themselves to my iTunes list). My 10-year reunion is later this year, and I'm fairly certain I could DJ the entire event at this point.

I listened to most of them last night and am finishing up this morning, and I am having a doggone great time. I was born in 1980, and while I certainly love 80's music (as does everyone), songs from the 80's don't jog my memory in the same way songs from the 90's do.

I was belting out Jewel's "Foolish Games" last night at the top of my lungs, with as much closed-eyed passion as I could possibly muster. For a second, I was back in France, taking a break from my math homework, singing to the picture of my little French boyfriend Henrik.

This morning, as I was bobbing my head to Red Hot Chili Peppers' remake of "Love Rollercoaster," I was briefly transported back to Drew's on campus apartment in '99, dancing wildly with the Lagarde sisters in the living room. Drew walked in during the song, took one look at us, and walked past us as though it was perfectly normal to have 3 girls that didn't even live there in his living room gyrating like idiots.

The 90's were a good time for music. I have to wonder what songs of the last 8 years will define this decade. Surely Britney's "Gimme More" will be on the list.

iTunes is begging for mercy. I'm gonna give it a break and go catch a matinee of "Juno." I saw "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" last night. (It was AWESOME, people, AWESOME.) As of this afternoon I will have seen as many movies as I saw during the entire year of 2007.

90s music rules. Well, most of it. Wasn't that the Hammer decade?

I was born in 1975, so my music decade is split - mid 80's to mid 90's. It sucks because I don't fit fully into either group. We were playing 80's Trivial Pursuit with some friends a while back and I couldn't get hardly questions before '85, but we racked up from '85-'89.

FUN! Wish I was joining you. :)

Was it just me, or were you also surprised that Nirvana kept the #1 spot?! Good song, but better than the rest?! I disagree!

And where was Right Said Fred? Tub Thumping?! Huh? (grant it, I haven't watched it ALL yet...) Mambo #5? People!

Sharon, I pegged that song as No. 1 before the countdown even started. The song and the group had an impact on the world around them that's still being felt - and I say that as someone that doesn't consider himself a fan of them.

But there area always songs on those lists (either in rankings or the fact that they were or were not ranked in the first place) that make you scratch your head.

I swaer, Stacey, sometimes I think you are the "Mississippi-Me"--I could have written this post about myself word fo word (including the singing-to-my-fench-boyfriend's-pic-in-France" part! We have got to swap stories sometime--I want to go back there sooooo bad! (When were you in France?)

PS) My type-o in my last comment sounded so redneck--"I SWAER!!" Heh heh! (You can see how neurotic I am for #1: Noticing it and #2: going back to mention it in a separate comment--Ha ha ha!

I was there in 97 for one semester, doing an exchange student program. I had enough credits to graduate from my high school so I didn't have to worry about doing well in school there - so I didn't :)

It was so horrible - I was less than a quarter mile from the Mediterranean! My host parents were loaded and had a gorgeous villa! I went to a beautiful Catholic school with the mountains in the background and a view of the sea! My host parents took me traveling almost every single weekend - Cannes, Avignon, Aix en Provence, Italy! Torture, I tell you. Torture.

And Sharon, no, I totally wasn't surprised about #1. I didn't predict it, but when it came on, I was all "ohhhhh." They basically ushered in the alt-grunge-rock thing, which shaped the music of the 90's.

NO WAY!!! I was there in '97, too!! That's so weird! I lived in a tiny little town called Besancon--ever heard of it? I miss it so much and want to take Landon there, but I have a newfound terror of flying--:o( I hope I get over it b/c I can't NOT go back!! (BTW--Do you have a MySpace account?)
