a case of the vapors, or, I'm a hero

I had such a fun evening planned for last night, after a very, very busy morning. I was going to make a quick appearance at a friend's birthday party at 6, and be home by 7 to play Settlers of Catan with some folks we've yet to have the pleasure of meeting.

The last time I gave blood, I nearly fainted in the chair. I said "I'm not feeling sooouuuuuhhhh" and faster than you can blink, my chair was flipped up so my feet were above my heart and put some cold packs on my chest and head, and I was sipping on some KoolAid drink containing, I'm sure, an unholy amount of sugar. I felt fine after I left, and had no problems for the rest of the night.

This time, I warned everyone of all of this. They kept my feet up, made sure I had snackage in the chair with me, had the cold packs at the ready, etc. I gave my blood, took as long as I could before standing up, drank my sugar drink and ate a cookie, and felt totally fine. Came home, grubbed on some Quizno's, and decided to take a nap.

Maybe that's where I went wrong. Stacey and naps are not good friends.

I got up after a quick snooze to go to the bathroom. On the way there, I pinched the hell out of my finger on the bathroom doors, cussed heartily, and whined in general for a minute. I finished my business, went to stand up, and my vision started to go black and I got very cold and I had to sit right on back down.

Because God surely desires that I have no dignity when it comes to my husband, I called out to Drew to let him know that I thought I was going to faint on the toilet. He stood close by as I got up again and started to walk back to the bed. All of a sudden, I realized that I didn't have any legs, and decided I'd feel a lot better if I laid down RIGHT NOW.

I didn't quite go unconscious, but I sure came close.

After spending a few moments exasperated over the amount of dust under my bed, I tried to get up and cracked my elbow on my hope chest.

I should not have gotten out of bed. Needless to say, we cancelled all of our plans and I spent the rest of the night trying to stay awake.

Next time I give blood (and oddly enough, there will be a next time) I will take the absolute last appointment of the day and come home and go straight to bed. I can't stand this almost-fainting crap. Even if giving blood does make me a hero.

Wow. I admire you for keeping with it. The last time I gave blood they politely suggested I not come back. Hope you're feeling all better today. And thanks for being a hero!

Are you supposed to get that sick from giving blood? Maybe you should check with your doctor. Okay, I've never given blood so I may be wrong, but it just seems that you shouldn't be that out of it from it. (Before anyone puts in two cents and gives me the whole donation PSA, I've been medically unable to give blood since years before I was old enough to do so.)

I have to know; did he giggle or snicker (even to himself) at any time during this episode?
