In which I talk about music

I've realized in the past few days that many of my fondest memories of the people closest to me are of them singing.

Mom: Crocodile Rock, Elton John; Blueberry Hill, Fats Domino. I don't know if y'all remember, but back in the late 80's, a gas station (Chevron?) came out with a series of tapes with music from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. My mom LOVED listening to those tapes, and I loved the songs on them. We even choreographed My Girl.

Daddy: Do You Feel Like We Do, Peter Frampton. He LOVES talking along with the guitar.

Papa Steve: Christmas Eve Sarajevo, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Yeah, I know you can't sing to this song, but he rocks out and "Ba-ba-ba"s to it anyway.

Jennifer: Keep 'Em Separated, The Offspring. Neither Jennifer nor I were blessed with good singing voices, but we ignored that one night when that came on the radio and we sang like we were superstars. We also liked dancing in the living room when nobody else was home.

Drew: Unchained Melody, The Righteous Brothers; Jonny B. Goode, Chuck Berry; Copacabana, Barry Manilow. He sings the first to me anytime it comes on, he does a darn good job at karaoke on the second one, and he sings the chorus to the third one like Sean Connery, which makes me laugh uncontrollably every time he does it. Particularly when Dave does the verses as Ricky Ricardo.

Angie: anything by Madonna. Angie drove me home pretty frequently when we both worked at Steamboat, and we would always sing on the way home. She'd do harmony, I'd do melody. I think my favorite was always Like a Prayer.

Dave: My Sharona, The Knack. He did this once at a completely packed karaoke bar and he just WORKED it. Dave has a great singing voice, and is awesome at karaoke.

Rob: Just a Gigolo, David Lee Roth; Only the Good Die Young, Billy Joel. It's amazing how well Rob can navigate fairly quick and complicated songs. And he just looks like he's having a darn good time when he's doing it.

Lauren: The Humpty Dance, Digital Underground. Y'all just wouldn't believe it. Sister can rap like nobody's business.

Melinda: (Warning: nobody in the world will get this unless they're Melinda.) Je suis un redneck et je m'appelle le breeder. Moo.

All of my friends: Love Shack, The B-52's. We do this one darn near every time we hit a karaoke bar, and nobody can shriek "tiiiiiiiiiin roof! rusted!" like my friends.

OMG, I totally forgot about those times! Always count on a good friend to send you down memory road.

Though I must mention, anytime I hear Ricky Martin (which is few and far between) i think of you!

Samoans! Do the humpty hump!... You know, I'm totally cool with going down in history with "The Humpty Dance" next to my name. Thank you.

Great post, but your comment on my site takes the cake. I haven't laughed out loud in awhile. I needed that!

There are now 3 people who like my singing- you, my mother, and my sister. Glad to see the fan club is growing. And I can't wait for Drew and I to collaborate on an album.
