Ace's eyes

Ace had to be in a high-oxygen environment for the first 7 weeks of his life, as many of you remember, so he could maintain normal levels of oxygen in his blood. Unfortunately, prolonged exposure to a high-oxygen environment can lead to vision problems.

We went to the opthalm opthamal eye doctor today, and Ace's eyes are not only gorgeous, they're perfect! No vision problems as far as the doctor can tell, and he doesn't have to go back for another 3 years! (Holy cow, in 3 years, I'll have a 3-year-old.)

The doctor commented on how he doesn't look anything like a preemie, echoing the sentiments of most people that have seen Ace. I'm feeling especially thankful at the moment about how his prematurity has been mostly uncomplicated by problems since coming home. Sure, we still have to deal with his umbilical hernia and hope it goes away on its own, but after hearing stories from others who have had preemies, and seeing them for myself, I'm just feeling all warm and fuzzy knowing my son has had so few post-NICU problems thus far. The verdict's still out on learning disabilities and future vision problems though, but I can't worry about that.
