As most of you know, I've struggled with depression throughout my adolescence and adult life. Drew, on the other hand, is one of the most mentally stable people I've ever met. Why is it, then, that I have the higher ratio of happy to sad songs in my iTunes list?
Last night, I was cleaning the kitchen while Drew was doing homework. As I was rearranging the spice shelf, I realized that Drew was playing all bummer music. Nothing but sad stuff, seriously. "Baby, can't you play something a little more... upbeat?" What does he put on? "Mmmmmm" by The Crash Test Dummies. Like, one of the most depressing songs ever. He kicked a few more sad ones, then finally played "Never Alone" by Barlow Girl. A little slow and melancholy, but it's about Jesus and how He never leaves us, so at least it was a little uplifting. Finally, he played "Get Up Offa That Thing" by James Brown... which he got up offa MY playlist. I think I left him alone after that, with his directed acylic graphs, wallet chain, black nailpolish and deadjournal entry.
I'm really worried. He listens to Phantom of the Opera and Evanescence a little too much. I think the most depressing song on my playlist is "Build Me Up Buttercup" by The Foundations. I mean, all she does is build him up just to let him down. And mess him around.

I was super dark in high school. However, I'm not saying that to say, "He'll be just fine!" I had times when I flirted with letting it go too far. Just keep talking. I enjoyed the artsy side of all of the dark music, poetry, etc. You just have to be careful about some of it. My mom allowed me room to breath, but kept close tabs on what I was writing and listening to. She didn't act nosy, but interested, which kept me from shutting her out.
OH, and I responded to your comment on my coffee post with a helpful hint!
Don't forget to ask Drew about his Queensryche and Slayer CD's. If I'm not mistaken, they were for the sole purpose of our Gause Boulevard cruisings, but if he's a pack rat like his momma is, they might still be around!
Drew listens to sad songs because he is emotionally stable. If he were unstable, those songs would affect him like they do you or I. His playlist is not happy happy joy joy because he does not need it to be. That's my theory.
