So apparently when a company owes you money, after a certain amount of time they have to give that money to the state. Of course, if you don't know about it, the state just hangs on to that money, but doesn't have to attempt to find you (even though they have your address) to give you your money. This stuff can usually be found at your state's treasury's or attorney general's website, but it's all listed neatly right here:
